Program notes from the November 2009 gathering (The Yes Men)

Thanks for coming to the dough festival, which was November's P&P. Luckily non of us was on a low carb diet. For those who couldn't make it, the movie "The Yes Men" is available for instant view on Netflix or on Google Video:

...and as Becca pointed out, they just came out with a sequel called "The Yes Men Fix The World" which tells of their recent escapades. Here is the trailer:

Stay happy and see you again soon!

Program notes from the October 2009 gathering (The Garden)

I've been getting a bit slow with posting the program notes. Maybe it's time for a short break? Anyway, thanks to everybody that came and helped to make it another memorable birthday. I am truly blessed to have you as friends.

After the movie Leon presented a few short clips by Taylor Mali. Here are two of them and I’m sure you can find more by googling his name.

Thanks also to One-il who played a few clips and provided an awesome idea for the P&P topic in December. Normally I would post them here but I'd rather keep it as a surprise for now so stay tuned.

Thanks again for coming and see you at the next P&P...

Program notes from the August 2009 gathering (open decks)

Wow, last night’s gathering was so much fun! When I first thought about throwing these events this is exactly what I had in mind - everybody contributing and participating in the program. Thank you all for coming and sharing these wonderful videos. Special thanks to Alisa and Sarai who stayed behind and helped clean the mess. We are definitely going to do another "open decks" event in the near future so if you encounter anything especially cool remember to bookmark it.

Here are some of the videos we saw, more or less in the order we watched them. Drop me a line if I forgot anything and I’ll add it to the list. See you next time!

Program notes from the June 2009 gathering (The Persuaders)

As always I am thankful to everyone who came and took part in the event. Your active participation is what makes it so great! I for one was pleasantly surprised by the movie and understand now why it was highly rated. I especially liked the guy who "hacks" into people's reptilian brain for market research, and the bit about political advertising and the kind of data collected on us unsuspecting folks for marketing purpose. In case you want to watch it again, The Persuaders website has the full length movie along with other interesting information.

Other topics that we covered:

Jake's awesome find about sexual subliminal messages in ads can be found here.

The clip from the Derren Brown show about using subliminal messages on advertising executives can be found here. It turns out that there is also an "American" version of the same stunt, which can be seen here.

Leon mentioned the funny movie "Crazy People" in which an advertising executive decides to tell the truth in his ads, which lands him in a mental hospital... Here is an awesome clip:

We concluded the evening with a short clip where Douglas Rushkoff discusses some of the ideas presented in his book "Life Inc."

Take care, and hope to see you at our next gathering.

Program notes from the May 2009 gathering (The Esoteric Agenda)

Thanks again to everybody who made it last night. Hope you were able to withstand the rapid stream of information that was presented in The Esoteric Agenda. As some of you commented, many of the "facts" presented in the movie require further investigation, although it will be interesting to see how the "Agenda 21/Codex Alimentarius" situation develops in the near future.

My favorite bit from the movie was the short skit "Media-Opoly". It appeared in the original broadcast of a March 1998 SNL episode, but was cut from the summer rerun. SNL producer Lorne Michaels told the New York Daily News he "didn't think it worked comedically". In a later interview, Harry Shearer said "The truth is that Lorne wanted to continue working at 30 Rock". Here is the full skit:

I’d also like to thank Leon for a wonderful and gorgeous slideshow. You can see more of his work on his website.

Thanks, and hope to see you next time!

Program notes from the April 2009 gathering (Religulous)

Once again thanks everyone for a wonderful P&P evening. Avi’s "Borekas" and Mikela’s strawberry desert have definitely made it into the P&P Hall of Fame so please don’t lose the recipe! We might ask you to prepare it again for a "best of" event in the future...

The only note I have is a link to the following cartoon which explains some of the concept of the Mormon Church and was banned by them:

Hope to see ya’ll in the May gathering.

Program notes from the March 2009 gathering (Waking Life)

Thanks for coming over last night and for being part of a record breaking P&P! If this trend continues I might need to move to a larger apartment or relocate the evening to a bigger venue... A quick reminder that I’ll be accepting movie candidates for the April event until March 17. After that I’ll spam you again with the final list of candidates and ask that you cast your vote on our website. I am also open to potluck theme ideas. Drop me a line.

More information about Dreamtime Circus can be found at www.dreamtimecircus.org.

The short film "A Good Night's Sleep" which Abby presented can be found here.

The movie Waking Life is available on Google Video

Program notes from the February 2009 gathering (WKJO)

Thanks again to those who made it last night despite the rain, late hour and the challenging movie. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy these gatherings so thanks for being a part of it!

All the material we played is available for free on the web. We started the evening with a preview of a talk by Richard Hoagland called "The Hyperdimensional Election of Barack Obama and 2012". It is almost 3 hours long but full of very interesting concepts and ideas. Part 1:

Part 2:

The evening’s feature film was "Who Killed John O’Neill" which was indeed difficult to watch as expected. Still, I enjoyed some of the new theories presented there that I didn’t hear before and are definitely worth a closer look. (100 min)

We finished the evening by sharing some of our favorite conspiracy theories websites. Two of them are Conspiracy Reality TV and Out There Radio Podcast. You can find them and other excellent sites on the "Recommended Links" area on the sidebar.

Oh yeh, we also talked about lucid dreaming and Lucidipedia during dinner.

Hope to see you and many others at the next installation of P&P. I'll post the official announcement in a few days.
