P&P event Tuesday August 10th - Catch 22

Greetings P&P friends! I'd like to once again invite you to be a part of our monthly gathering which will take place as usual on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. The last three events were influenced by the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico so this month we are going to take a break and watch something a bit lighter.

The movie Catch 22 (1970) is a cult classic, based on Joseph Heller's book by the same name. It tells the story of a Word War II air force bombardier Yossarian and his attempts to get discharged from the military on the grounds of insanity. Much like M.A.S.H., this parody focuses on "military mentality" and bureaucratic societies in general. BTW, did I mention that this is P&P event no.22? Anyway, here is a link to the trailer.

Potluck theme for this month is Finger Foods! Bring your favorite buffet style dish, tapas recipe or anything that come in small pieces. Here are some ideas to inspire you: Finger Food Ideas. If you don't feel like cooking then just bring some drinks or simply your fabulous self!

Tentative schedule for the evening:
07:30 - 08:30 Gathering.
08:30 - 09:30 Community potluck dinner. Theme: Finger Foods.
09:30 - 11:30 Feature presentation: Catch 22 (121 minutes)

Hope you can make it! P&P is going to go on a hiatus after the October event so I'd really like to see as many of you lovely people as possible before taking off...

Potluck and Propaganda is aimed to present information and encourage critical thinking. Let go of your belief systems (BS) and investigate different reality tunnels. The views and opinions expressed during the events do not necessarily reflect the ones of P&P, its organizers or participants.

Program notes from the March 2010 gathering (Milk, Open Decks)

Thanks everyone for coming to another P&P, even though it turned out that most of you have already seen the movie... I guess I am the last San Franciscan who still hasn't! Update for those who couldn't make it - after devouring 4 lbs of cheese and 1 lbs of chocolate we ended up doing a short "open decks" session since the Fondue took longer than expected and many people had to leave early. Here is the just of it (hope I didn't forget anything):

Logorama

Conan O'Brien - Walker Texas Ranger Lever

Will It Blend? - Chuck Norris

Thank You South Carolina

Program notes from the October 2009 gathering (The Garden)

I've been getting a bit slow with posting the program notes. Maybe it's time for a short break? Anyway, thanks to everybody that came and helped to make it another memorable birthday. I am truly blessed to have you as friends.

After the movie Leon presented a few short clips by Taylor Mali. Here are two of them and I’m sure you can find more by googling his name.

Thanks also to One-il who played a few clips and provided an awesome idea for the P&P topic in December. Normally I would post them here but I'd rather keep it as a surprise for now so stay tuned.

Thanks again for coming and see you at the next P&P...

Program notes from the August 2009 gathering (open decks)

Wow, last night’s gathering was so much fun! When I first thought about throwing these events this is exactly what I had in mind - everybody contributing and participating in the program. Thank you all for coming and sharing these wonderful videos. Special thanks to Alisa and Sarai who stayed behind and helped clean the mess. We are definitely going to do another "open decks" event in the near future so if you encounter anything especially cool remember to bookmark it.

Here are some of the videos we saw, more or less in the order we watched them. Drop me a line if I forgot anything and I’ll add it to the list. See you next time!

P&P event THURSDAY July 9th - Being John Malkovich

Greetings from P&P!
Summer is here, and with it many opportunities for fun and adventure. In the last few events we've been dealing with pretty heavy topics and I'm sure you'll agree that we need a break. So this month we're going to lighten things up and watch the trippy and intelligent comedy "Being John Malkovich" which is one of my all time favorites. Here is the trailer:

Because of my trip to Shanghai, the event will take place on THURSDAY July 9th instead of the usual Tuesday. Don't you find it a bit strange that the 2nd Tuesday of the month is 5 days AFTER the 2nd Thursday?? Anyway, to complement the 'light' nature of the evening, the potluck theme will be "Tapas". Here are some recipe ideas. I'll be setting up the tables in "buffet" style, so actually any dish that can be easily divided would work great.

The evening's schedule will be:
07:30 - 09:30 Community potluck dinner/cocktail party. Theme: Tapas.
09:30 - 10:00 Open decks - contact me if you’d like to present anything.
10:00 - 11:30 Feature film: "Being John Malkovich".

Hope you can join us!

Potluck and Propaganda is aimed to present information and encourage critical thinking. Let go of your belief systems (BS) and investigate different reality tunnels. The opinions expressed in the movies shown do not necessarily reflect the ones of P&P or its organizers.

Program notes from the June 2009 gathering (The Persuaders)

As always I am thankful to everyone who came and took part in the event. Your active participation is what makes it so great! I for one was pleasantly surprised by the movie and understand now why it was highly rated. I especially liked the guy who "hacks" into people's reptilian brain for market research, and the bit about political advertising and the kind of data collected on us unsuspecting folks for marketing purpose. In case you want to watch it again, The Persuaders website has the full length movie along with other interesting information.

Other topics that we covered:

Jake's awesome find about sexual subliminal messages in ads can be found here.

The clip from the Derren Brown show about using subliminal messages on advertising executives can be found here. It turns out that there is also an "American" version of the same stunt, which can be seen here.

Leon mentioned the funny movie "Crazy People" in which an advertising executive decides to tell the truth in his ads, which lands him in a mental hospital... Here is an awesome clip:

We concluded the evening with a short clip where Douglas Rushkoff discusses some of the ideas presented in his book "Life Inc."

Take care, and hope to see you at our next gathering.
